TestCrew guide cover showing how a tester joins a closed test

To join an Android app recruited through TestCrew, use the Google account that belongs to the shared testcrew-closed Google Group and open the standard Play Store details URL shown in the listing.

The listing does not normally provide a separate opt-in URL. The developer configures the shared Google Group as an eligible tester group in Play Console, and the tester opens the app’s regular Google Play page with the eligible account.

Before joining

Confirm that you can meet the listing’s conditions:

  • You have an Android device
  • Your Android version is supported
  • You can use the required Google account
  • You can join the testcrew-closed Google Group
  • You can remain opted in for 14 days or the stated period
  • You can actually test the requested features
  • You accept the permissions and other test conditions

Joining an incompatible listing creates extra work for both the participant and the developer.

Step 1: Read the recruitment details

Review the following information in TestCrew:

  • The app’s purpose
  • Supported devices and Android versions
  • Features to test
  • Sign-in method
  • Availability of a test account
  • Required permissions
  • Feedback method
  • Return-testing and credit conditions

Ask the developer about important missing details before marking the task complete.

Step 2: Choose the Google account

Use the same Google account in all of these places:

  1. Membership in the testcrew-closed Google Group
  2. The browser that opens the TestCrew listing URL
  3. The Google Play Store on the Android device

This is especially important when the device has several Google accounts.

Step 3: Join the shared Google Group

Join the Google Group associated with testcrew-closed@googlegroups.com using the account you will use for testing.

Membership may take some time to propagate. If you cannot join, verify the account and any participation restrictions before contacting the developer.

Step 4: Open the Play Store details URL

Open the standard Play Store details URL shown in the listing.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.example.app

Confirm that the app name matches the TestCrew listing, then continue to installation from Google Play.

If the app is not shown

Check:

  • Whether the correct Google account is active
  • Whether that account has joined the testcrew-closed Google Group
  • Whether the URL is a normal Play Store details URL
  • Whether the recruitment has ended or been paused
  • Whether the release has been published
  • Whether your country and device are eligible

See Why You Cannot Join or Install a Google Play Closed-Test App for a fuller troubleshooting sequence.

Step 5: Install from Google Play

Review the app page and install the app from Google Play.

If installation fails, record the exact message and the environment.

Message shown:
Device model:
Android version:
Google account:
Existing app version installed:

Use the Google Play build required by the listing rather than an APK shared directly by the developer.

Step 6: Test the requested features

Follow the developer’s requested sequence.

Example:

  1. Create an account
  2. Sign in
  3. Save one item
  4. Edit the saved item
  5. Restart the app
  6. Confirm that the data remains

Do not enter real personal information, payment information, or confidential data unless it is genuinely required and you understand how it will be handled. Prefer test data.

Step 7: Send useful feedback

When a problem occurs:

Pixel 7 / Android 15
After pressing Save on the photo screen, the loading indicator remained and the app did not continue.
The same result occurred twice.

When no problem occurs:

Tested on a Galaxy S23 running Android 15.
Registration, sign-in, data saving, and restoration after restarting worked in the requested scope.
I did not find a major issue in those flows.

State the device, Android version, actions, result, and reproducibility when relevant.

Step 8: Complete the TestCrew action

After you have performed the requested operations and submitted the report, update the completion state according to the current in-app instructions.

Credit rewards, developer confirmation, and completion requirements may change, so use the latest TestCrew screen as the source of truth.

During the 14-day period

  • Do not leave the test program
  • Do not switch to a different Google account
  • Check an updated version when the developer asks
  • Answer follow-up questions when reasonably possible
  • Do not end participation before completion is confirmed

Uninstalling the app may not always remove the opt-in state, but leaving it uninstalled for a long period without telling the developer is not a good testing practice.

When participating as a return test

The same testing standards apply when you are returning participation to someone who tested your app. Install the app, perform the requested operations, and report the result.

See How TestCrew Return Testing Works for status management.

  • Completed the TestCrew action
  • Kept the test participation active
